MEET DUBROVNIK
This tour is high on most travellers’ lists as it has been tailored for all guests who would like to learn interesting and fun facts about Dubrovnik’s present and past.
Although Dubrovnik is flanked by towering mountains and the Adriatic Sea, the Old Town is a fairly flat, very walkable area.
Here the sights are aplenty; this remarkable city is packed to its rafters with churches, monasteries, palaces and picturesque stone-paved streets and squares. You are bound to be fascinated by the history of Dubrovnik so join me to discover the “Pearl of the Adriatic”.
LIGHTS & SOUNDS OF DUBROVNIK
Do you fancy a different evening out in Dubrovnik? Before you hit the bars and restaurants of the Old Town join me for an orientational walk to discover the lights and sounds of Dubrovnik. The tour takes place in the early evening away from the mob of day-trippers and you are given the chance to fully appreciate the architecture and the atmosphere around you. In order to conclude in a nice tone you will have the chance to attend to a classical music concert*.
* Concerts take place on selected dates, please contact me for more details. If you’d like to book for the concert our walking tour will begin at 7pm and will end at 9pm at the concert venue.Concert tickets are not included but I shall be happy to help you make a reservation.
THE MIGHTY WALLS
Dubrovnik is hemmed in by its walls and every “Must List” about Dubrovnik must begin with the ancient walls. The ramparts are the main highlight of Dubrovnik. From the walls you’ll get the chance to take a bird’s-eye view of the Old Town and the patchwork of red terracotta rooftops, a real feast for the eye.
In order to better understand the importance these walls had we shall start our walking tour with the visit to the historical centre and then we shall climb and walk around the mighty walls.
WAR & PEACE – A Tale of War
Croatia burst on the maps of Europe as an independent country only in the 1990s after the break up of Yugoslavia. That was a period of instability, ethnic violence and unfortunately Dubrovnik became a tragic victim of the conflict even though the city was under UNESCO’s protection. The bombing of Dubrovnik shocked the world.
During this tour you will learn how Dubrovnik was attacked, kept under siege, how its people defended the city and how the city has gone a long way since the early 1990s. We shall begin our tour with a cable car ride to the top of Srđ mountain where we shall visit the Museum of the Croatian War of Independence. The Museum is located in the Fort Imperial from where one can enjoy postcard-perfect views of Dubrovnik. The visit to the Museum will be followed by a walk through the Old Town to discover the highlihts of the city which after the aggression was brought back to its former glory.
SYNAGOGA HAEBREORUM
The Jewish Community of Dubrovnik
Many Sephardic Jews settled in Dubrovnik following their expulsion from Spain and Portugal. Even if the life in the ghetto had not always been easy Yeshayah Cohen, (a 16th century philosopher and poet) wrote: If I had to find a peaceful place to rest in my old age, above any other city I would fancy only Dubrovnik.
This tour will start from the western city gate – Pile – and will include the main landmarks of the Old Town (exteriors only) such as the Rector’s Palace, the Old Port, the Franciscan Monastery, Onofrio’s Fountain, etc. and then towards the eastern end of Stradun, the main street, a narrow alley is home to a tiny synagogue dating from the 15th century. Žudioska Ulica (Jewish Street) is where the Jewish ghetto used to be.
Apart from visiting the sanctuary we shall take a peek into the small museum which contains valuable menorahs and Torah scrolls, alongside information on the history of the Jewish community in Dubrovnik.
